01
Pathway: the route. Sequence: the step.
A pathway is one route of supernatural abilities. Its numbered stages, called Sequences, run from 9 toward 0; the lower number is the higher stage. Potions use formulas and ingredients to give access to those stages. Begin with the action a character needs but cannot yet perform, then choose a next step that changes the kind of scene you can write.
02
Digestion: learning how to live with the potion
The guide describes the acting method: behaving in accordance with a potion's name and learning from that role helps digest it and reduces the risk of losing control. It is not literal food digestion or permission to forget who you are. Our acting card invents a stricter example to show how required behavior might strain trust; betrayal is not a universal source requirement.
03
Who has the formula or ingredient?
Churches and other groups hold different knowledge and resources. A character who knows the desired next ability may still need someone else's cooperation. Use the advancement card to write a supplier's demand, a counteroffer and the consequence of leaving without the lesson. The relationship can outlast the purchase.
SPECIFIC POWERS. REAL LIMITS.
Rules in action
Read the mechanics together: what the rules permit, what they cost, and which kinds of stories they create.
Follow five early stages of the Fool pathway. At each step, name a new action the character can attempt and the preparation, knowledge or relationship it still requires.
9
Seer
Find clues through divination; interpretation remains necessary.
8
Clown
Control movement and expression; physical precision joins intuition.
7
Magician
Prepare tricks, substitutes and flame routes; the environment becomes a toolkit.
6
Faceless
Change appearance; identity and its obligations become tools and hazards.
5
Marionettist
Control Spirit Body Threads; fights become contests over time and hidden agents.
A WRITER’S FIELD GUIDE
22 pathways, 22 different story tools
Use this as a scene finder, not a list of powers every character owns. Each pathway below begins with its Sequence 9 name and gives selected abilities from different stages in the publisher guide. The question is an independent writing exercise, not a claim that its scene occurs in the novel. Open a linked card for the rule, limits and a worked example.
01 / Misdirection & identity

Writing question · our interpretation
Choose an ability the target is using to protect someone. What must the thief do for that person if taking it leaves them exposed?
04 / Observation & influence
Visionary
Starting sequence: Spectator
A Spectator reads behavior and expressions; a Telepath extends this into surface thought and emotional cues.

Hanged Man
Starting sequence: Secrets Suppliant

08 / Spirits & remains
Death
Starting sequence: Corpse Collector
A Corpse Collector resists death-related conditions and perceives some spirits; a Gravedigger can communicate with nearby spirits.
Writing question · our interpretation

09 / Night & dreams
Darkness

14 / Concealment & curses
Demoness
Starting sequence: Assassin
A Witch becomes invisible and uses curses through a connection such as blood; progression also transforms the body.
Writing question · our interpretation
Give a transformed character a meeting with someone who used to recognize them. What private promise can establish continuity when appearance cannot?
15 / Desire & moral erosion
Abyss
Starting sequence: Criminal
The guide describes a progression from enhanced criminal skills toward demonic abilities, with the Cold-blooded stage losing conscience.

21 / Probability & timing
Wheel of Fortune
Starting sequence: Monster
Early luck fluctuates; a Winner can accumulate fortune through restraint for a critical moment.
Writing question · our interpretation
Show luck being saved and one earlier expenditure. When a smaller rescue needs help, what ordinary option can the character try before spending the reserve?
A Polymath analyzes an observed ability and attempts a weaker imitation through understanding, rather than a stored recording.
Writing question · our interpretation
Write two explanations for an observed ability that predict different results. What small experiment can disprove one before anyone relies on the imitation?
