A place to begin

Story ideas.

Start with someone who wants something: recover a document, keep a shop working, or finish a final bus route. Each premise gives them a choice to make.

How to turn a premise into a short story

Choose a premise above if you need a starting situation. If you already have a story and need to fix a scene, use the published-story studies below: choose a negotiation, an offer that goes wrong, or a success that brings a new duty. In either case, begin with the person who cannot ignore the problem.

  1. Give the protagonist a concrete goal they can pursue in a scene. “Keep the shop open until tomorrow” gives you an action to write; “find happiness” still needs a situation.
  2. Put an obstacle between the character and that goal. Make their first attempt change the situation, so the next scene follows from a choice rather than coincidence.
  3. For a short story, concentrate on one consequential decision and show its immediate cost. For a longer story, ask which relationship or obligation keeps the conflict alive after that decision.

Find story conflict in published fiction

Use The Ransom of Red Chief when control is failing to win a deal, Pride and Prejudice when an offer damages a relationship, and Frankenstein when achieving the goal should create the next responsibility. Redesign those goals and consequences around your own characters.
