Put it under pressure
Scene test: a witness begins to hesitate mid-sentence. An ally must decide whether it is fear, deception or the first stage of an attack that has already begun.
Control builds in stages, giving an apparently helpless target a shrinking window to act.
A Marionettist manipulates Spirit Body Threads. Initial control slows a target’s thought and movement; sustained control can turn the target into a marionette.
Conversion takes time and control operates within a limited distance. A marionette can retain its original Beyonder abilities.

Make the intervention window legible. In your own system, define precisely what distance, interruption or outside action breaks the process.
In an independent court-magic example, an attacker must get a witness to repeat three prompted phrases within one uninterrupted minute. Each phrase slows the witness's movements; three complete the takeover. Ten seconds without hearing the attacker resets an incomplete attempt. A junior clerk notices the second phrase and can call a recess behind the soundproof door, but the judge demands a reason. Naming the witness's protected past would explain the threat and expose the identity the court promised to conceal.
How does the clerk obtain ten quiet seconds, and what explanation can they give without exposing the witness?

Give the investigator accurate information that supports more than one explanation, then a way to test them.
Start with physical evidence that permits two explanations, then let the character test one detail.
