Powers & systems · Lord of Mysteries

The vision shows an open gate. It cannot tell you why it opened.

Give the investigator accurate information that supports more than one explanation, then a way to test them.

See it in a scene

Independent example: an investigator can replay a witness's sights and sounds, but cannot read thoughts or recover anything the witness did not perceive.

Pressure
A dockworker's memory shows a guard opening a floodgate after dark. The investigator suspects sabotage; the guard says he was releasing pressure to stop the wall from breaking.
Choice
Check the upstream gauge and maintenance log before accusing him. High water recorded before the opening supports the emergency account; normal water would leave that claim unexplained. Either record could still need authentication.
Consequence
The memory remains accurate under both explanations. The test changes whether the next task is repairing the wall or investigating an unauthorized opening; it does not magically read the guard's motives.

What the source describes

The guide lists divination and ritual abilities for the Seer, cautions against relying completely on divination, and notes limited direct combat options.

CUESHELF INTERPRETATION

How this moves the story

A reliable observation can still leave motive, timing or permission unknown. Show the reader the same limited evidence the investigator receives. Two plausible explanations should lead to different next actions, so checking the answer matters.

Try it with your characters

Write one fact your information power can establish. Give it two explanations, then choose a test whose result would separate them.
