Let victory leave a valuable resource that former allies now have to divide or guard.

See it in a scene

Independent example: a valley has twelve heating stones. Each warms one shelter, cannot be copied or split, and can be moved by anyone. Six are recovered from a defeated raider.

Pressure
The clinic needs four tonight. Families whose stones were stolen can identify all six and want them returned before the freeze.
Choice
Return each stone, keep some for the clinic, or negotiate which families can share the clinic's shelter. Every plan has to account for all six stones and who moves where.
Consequence
Returning them restores homes but leaves patients short of heat. Keeping them protects the clinic by extending the families' loss. A shared shelter needs beds and transport; an appeal to fairness cannot produce more stones.

CUESHELF INTERPRETATION

How this moves the story

If power survives its owner, winning a fight does not settle who should have it. A rescuer, victim and public authority can all make different claims. Establish how the resource moves and who needs it, then let the victory start an argument with practical consequences.

Try it with your characters

After a victory in your story, name the useful thing left behind. Write two allies asking for it for different reasons, and what each loses if refused.
