How to write a plot twist that feels earned

A useful plot twist changes the meaning of earlier events and creates a new decision. The ideas above pair a revelation with clues and consequences, so you can work backward from the turn instead of adding a surprise at the end.

  1. Write down what the reader and protagonist currently believe, then decide which part is incomplete. Give them a plausible reason to hold that belief.
  2. Plant a detail that supports the first explanation but also fits the truth. Check that the viewpoint can honestly show it; withholding something the narrator would naturally notice can make the reveal feel arbitrary.
  3. Make the revelation change a choice, a relationship or the cost of reaching the goal. If everyone would act the same way afterward, strengthen the consequence before adding more clues.

Need a believable wrong explanation? Start with The Open Window. Need two people to know different things? Try After Twenty Years. Need the reversal to grow from an object already present? Read the medals scene in The Story-Teller. Each source scene stays behind its spoiler notice.
