The heirloom was never valuable

Siblings spend a summer arguing over a supposedly priceless object. A valuation reveals it is a replica—but the letters documenting its repairs are irreplaceable.

01

What we believe

The siblings plan to sell the supposed heirloom to pay a debt due at the end of summer.

02

What changes

The valuation exposes the family story about its price. Letters kept with it show who repeatedly paid for repairs and why keeping it mattered to them.

03

Plant this clue

An old repair bill exceeds the value of the materials, offering an earlier clue. After the valuation, the siblings must find another way to pay the debt and decide who keeps the object and letters.

Two ways to take it further

  • Let one sibling suspect the low price but conceal it to keep the others visiting through the summer.
  • End with a disagreement about sharing a private family letter: preserving it does not automatically give either sibling permission to publish it.
