The clerk says no. His boss finds someone else to do it.
A quiet refusal leaves the boss with an awkward choice: punish a useful worker, do the task himself, or make a colleague take it on.
Let people become briefly trapped by an impressive idea they endorsed without understanding.
The complete short story, including the staged history lesson, dismissal and arrival of the genuine governess.
After missing her train while intervening on behalf of a mistreated horse, Lady Carlotta is mistaken by Mrs. Quabarl for the family's new governess, Miss Hope. She accepts the mistaken role for amusement. The Quabarls insist that history should bring real lives to the children rather than make them memorize names and dates.
Carlotta announces the Schartz-Metterklume method; the parents pretend to recognize the name. The next morning she has the children enact early Roman history. Under threat of a spanking, the boys drag the lodge-keeper's daughters toward the house as the Sabine women. Mrs. Quabarl intervenes. Carlotta replies that this interference will teach the boys that the women escaped, then is dismissed. The genuine Miss Hope later arrives. The story presents a malicious performance under a borrowed identity, not a validated teaching method.
The original joke includes coercion and distress imposed on children outside the household; that is a tonal cost, not harmless proof of a brilliant lesson. Do not report Carlotta's invented accusations about Canon Teep as facts, or present the method as an established pedagogy. The mother's eventual refusal is real; her embarrassment does not make her powerless forever.
The Schartz-Metterklume Method in Beasts and Super-Beasts, from the railway-station mistake to Carlotta's final 'not at all tiresome—for me'. ↗
Complete primary short story read in the transcription of the 1914 John Lane edition, Project Gutenberg 269. The method, accusations and luggage claims are parts of Carlotta's performance, not independently verified facts.
The Quabarls want lively lessons and do not want to admit they do not recognize the named method. Carlotta uses that hesitation to take their stated preference farther than they accept. When they intervene, she treats their objection as failure to follow their own ideal. They can still dismiss her; embarrassment delays resistance rather than abolishing it.
For a lighter scene, choose a workplace or family rule whose owner wants to appear informed. Let someone ask permission to apply it literally. Make the result inconvenient but reversible, with the cost falling on the rule's owner. Write the moment they must choose between admitting confusion and continuing. The source's coercion of children is not a harmless teaching model.

An institution promises compensation, but sets the deadline, controls the process and profits from the people seeking help.
A falsely accused character needs other people to change how they treat her, not just one ally to say they believe her.
