The company that took everything offers a way to win it back
An institution promises compensation, but sets the deadline, controls the process and profits from the people seeking help.
A quiet refusal leaves the boss with an awkward choice: punish a useful worker, do the task himself, or make a colleague take it on.
A lawyer hires Bartleby to copy documents. The office also expects clerks to compare copies together, a routine that depends on ordinary compliance.
Bartleby, the Scrivener: Early office scenes, the first refusal to compare copies and the employer’s response.
Bartleby calmly declines to help with checking while continuing to copy. His lack of anger or explanation unsettles the employer, who postpones action and has another clerk do the task.
If refusing changes nobody's workload or options, it is only an unusual line of dialogue. Show who pays for the boss's hesitation. Bartleby's motives remain unexplained here; do not supply a diagnosis or confirmed political program.

Selected passages: Early office scenes, the first refusal to compare copies and the employer’s response.
Bartleby refuses one ordinary task without starting an argument. The lawyer cannot solve the problem by answering an insult or correcting an excuse. Each time he puts off a decision, somebody else must do the work. The scene reveals how far his authority reaches through what he actually enforces.
Pick a routine duty in your story and have one person calmly decline it. Give the person in charge a reason not to dismiss them immediately. Write who is asked to cover the task, how that person reacts, and what the boss must decide the next time it happens.
