The Time Machine · H. G. Wells

The Time Machine: Section 9, the underground encounter and four remaining safety matches.

The situation

Underground, the Time Traveller discovers that light repels the Morlocks. He has brought matches, but has already spent some entertaining the Eloi.

What the source describes

He realizes only four matches remain while surrounded in darkness. Each short burst of light buys space to retreat, and extinction of the flame exposes him again.

How the choices connect

  1. An effective tool is used before its scarcity matters.
  2. A dangerous environment exposes the limited remaining supply.
  3. Using it solves the immediate problem while reducing the margin for the next one.

Watch for…

An arbitrary last-minute shortage feels like author interference. Track why supply was spent, and do not silently replenish it between scenes.

CUESHELF INTERPRETATION

How this moves the story

Light still repels the Morlocks; the rule has not changed. What changes is the Traveller's awareness of his remaining matches. Earlier casual spending now matters, and every short flame creates a decision about how much progress to make before darkness returns.

Try it in your story

Give an existing ability a countable supply. Show one use before the danger is understood, then let the character count what remains. Write two immediate needs that cannot both receive the full supply. Track expenditure through the escape instead of replenishing it between scenes.
