One partner sends the letters. The other has to mind the boy.

Give partners believable reasons to disagree about a plan by showing who does its unpleasant daily work.

The Ransom of Red Chief · O. Henry

The Ransom of Red Chief: The Ransom of Red Chief, Bill’s request to lower the demand and response to the counteroffer.

The situation

Sam manages messages and reconnaissance while Bill spends more time keeping the kidnapped boy occupied. Both expect to share the proceeds.

What the source describes

Bill endures the boy’s violent games and begs Sam to reduce the ransom. He later urges acceptance of the father’s costly counteroffer, treating escape from another night as a bargain.

How the choices connect

  1. Partners agree on a common reward.
  2. One bears most of the exhausting work needed to obtain it.
  3. That partner lowers the acceptable reward and finally prefers paying to stop.

Watch for…

Keep this distinct from the ransom reversal: the useful focus is the partnership’s distribution of costs, not simply a troublesome captive.

CUESHELF INTERPRETATION

How this moves the story

Sam and Bill expect shared proceeds, but Bill spends more time dealing with the boy. Each difficult hour changes what Bill considers an acceptable deal. Sam's distance from that work lets him hold out longer. Their disagreement grows from different experience of the same plan.

Try it in your story

Divide a shared plan into the attractive task and the recurring unpleasant task. Write one day from the second worker's point of view. Let that worker propose a lower reward, earlier exit or new division of labor, and make the partner answer the specific cost being described.
