The Metamorphosis · Franz Kafka; translated by David Wyllie

The Metamorphosis: Part 2, the debate about furniture and Gregor’s defense of the picture.

The situation

Gregor’s new body benefits from space to crawl. His sister wants to remove furniture; his mother fears that an empty room would imply the loss of hope that he will return to human life.

What the source describes

Gregor initially enjoys crawling but becomes distressed as possessions are removed. He clings to a framed picture while the room is cleared, making a practical adjustment into a confrontation.

How the choices connect

  1. A changed need makes an old arrangement inconvenient.
  2. A helper optimizes the room for the new condition.
  3. The person receiving help defends an object that means more than its function.

Watch for…

Avoid claiming that the sister’s only motive is to erase Gregor. The disagreement includes practical care, uncertainty and competing interpretations.

CUESHELF INTERPRETATION

How this moves the story

Removing furniture gives Gregor more room to move in his changed body. It also removes objects connecting him to his former life. Holding on to the picture makes the conflict visible: practical help and the wish to remain recognizable do not lead to the same arrangement of the room.

Try it in your story

Choose a useful change someone makes on another person's behalf. Name the object or routine the recipient refuses to lose and why. Write the disagreement around that one thing, allowing both people a reason for their choice. Do not make a mismatch in care proof of malice.
