Frankenstein: Chapter 10, the glacier encounter and the request to hear the creature’s story.

The situation

Victor encounters his creation in the mountains, angry and ready to reject it. The creature is physically stronger and insists that its creator owes it a hearing.

What the source describes

The creature invokes the right of the accused to speak and Victor’s special responsibility as maker. It describes its misery and threatens consequences, then asks him to hear its account before judging.

How the choices connect

  1. The hero attempts to reduce the opponent to an enemy.
  2. The opponent invokes a duty the hero would recognize in another case.
  3. Hearing the account becomes a consequential decision rather than passive exposition.

Watch for…

A long explanation is not automatically a turning point. It must change a decision the listener can make. The creature's account is testimony; listening does not prove every claim or excuse its actions.

CUESHELF INTERPRETATION

How this moves the story

The creature combines strength with a request Victor recognizes: hear the accused before judging. Victor must decide whether to listen before deciding whether to believe or help. Those are separate choices. A hearing can reveal a possible bargain while leaving the opponent responsible for what it has done.

Try it in your story

Choose a rule your protagonist expects others to follow. Let an opponent invoke it with a specific request, such as time to explain or protection for a witness. Decide which later action depends on hearing them: surrendering a weapon, attempting a rescue or considering a bargain. Write the terms on which the hero agrees to listen.
