The sound that goes missing

Describe a familiar morning by removing one sound at a time. Make the final silence a choice.

01

Start here

Establish three ordinary sounds in the opening paragraph.

02

Try this constraint

Do not show the cause. Each absence must change what the narrator does.

03

Keep writing

Give the narrator a sound they could make, but decide not to.

Two ways to take it further

  • Use a busy apartment stairwell rather than an isolated house.
  • Let the narrator’s silence protect someone who is still making noise.
