Three room details that work together / A WORK EXAMPLE

Why does this bedroom have a vent into the next room?

THE SETUP

Holmes inspects a bedroom connected to a suspicious death. He notices a bell-rope that does not ring, a ventilator connecting to the next room, and a bed fixed in place.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE WORK

In Holmes’s explanation, the ventilator, dummy rope and fixed bed form a route for a snake sent from Roylott’s room toward the sleeper. Features that appeared to belong to the room’s ordinary equipment are parts of the murder arrangement.

Why this works

Our analysis of the design

01

Inspect the room in a spatial sequence: the ventilator connects to the next room, the dummy bell-rope hangs toward the sleeper, and the bed cannot be moved away. Ask what each should ordinarily do and what it actually permits.

02

In Holmes's explanation, these details form a route from Roylott's room to a predictable target. The fixed bed matters because an attacker needs the sleeper in the same position.

03

The explanation uses several observations made during the inspection. Readers can retrace that route, although the story's account of the animal is not reliable natural history.

Try this approach in your own story

Independent example: a small office appears occupied after closing. Sketch a timed desk lamp, a speaker playing a recorded meeting and the only camera angle through the door. Give each an ordinary use before showing how their placement creates a false impression. Then choose one check, such as viewing from another doorway, that would expose the arrangement.

Borrow the way the spatial clues connect. Research the mechanics of your own device separately; this story's snake behavior should not be treated as scientifically reliable. A new reveal must account for the objects already shown.
